What The Hell Are We Eating?

Let's talk turkey, or maybe juicy seafood.

No matter, the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) is just that, sad. Yet we love it! She is on Ear Buds this week and, Her name is H.E.R. I will explain everything after some Polly Juice, our Strain of the Week. Did we forget Relationship Goals? We did not. Thank you for listening. Please leave us a comment, and share the show with a friend, that's how we grow.

Deron has seen it all in the restaurant industry—from greasy seafood boils to indulgent brunch spreads. His journey through the culinary world, paired with his personal transformation toward a healthier lifestyle, offers a unique perspective on America’s eating habits and the impact of the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.).

The S.A.D. Reality

The Standard American Diet is infamous for its heavy reliance on processed foods, saturated fats, and refined sugars. This diet has been linked to chronic health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even cancer. Deron witnessed this firsthand during his years in the restaurant business. The dishes he served often epitomized the worst aspects of S.A.D.—meals loaded with butter, sugar, and unhealthy fats that were more about indulgence than nourishment.

Reflecting on his time in the industry, Deron critiques how these eating habits have become normalized. He notes that while convenience and taste drive the popularity of such foods, they come at a steep cost to public health. The abundance of free radicals generated by these diets wreaks havoc on the body, contributing to oxidative stress and chronic disease. For Deron, this realization was a wake-up call that spurred him to change his own eating habits.

The Juicy Seafood Experience

Among Deron’s many roles in the restaurant world was his stint at Mr. and Mrs. Crab, a seafood boil joint where meals were served drenched in butter and laid out on brown paper tablecloths. While these establishments are popular for their communal dining experience and bold flavors, Deron couldn’t ignore the unhealthy aspects of such meals. The copious amounts of butter and sodium-laden seasonings made these dishes emblematic of excess—a far cry from the balanced nutrition he now advocates.

Brunch: A Love-Hate Relationship

Known as the self-proclaimed “Brunch King,” Deron has worked countless brunch shifts across various restaurants. He’s seen patrons indulge in towering stacks of French toast smothered in whipped cream, endless strips of bacon, and decadent egg dishes. While brunch has evolved into a cultural phenomenon celebrated for its social and culinary appeal, Deron remains critical of its excesses.

Eggs, for instance, are a source of frustration for him—not because of their taste but due to their ever-changing reputation in dietary science. “One year they’re bad; the next year they’re good,” he quips, reflecting on the confusion surrounding nutritional advice.

A Shift Toward Whole Foods

Today, Deron has left behind the indulgent menus of his past in favor of a diet centered on whole foods—lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. This shift reflects his commitment to living a healthier life on the road with his wife, Evonne, as they embrace a content-creating lifestyle from their RV.

Deron’s story is not just about food; it’s about transformation. It’s about recognizing the flaws in America’s dietary patterns and making conscious choices to prioritize health over convenience or tradition. Through his experiences and insights, Deron encourages others to rethink their relationship with food and consider how small changes can lead to significant improvements in well-being.

Thank you for supporting Deron and Evonne as they inspire others to live healthier, happier lives—one meal (and one story) at a time!
